Background:
- Prof. Tuncer Ören was asked in 2001 by Dr. Bruce Fairchild, the President
of the SCS (2000-2002), to
develop a code of ethics for simulationists. He was appointed in 2002 by Prof.
Bernard P. Zeigler, the President of the SCS (2002-2004), as the AVP for Ethics
of the SCS.
- A Code of
Professional Ethics for Simulationists was developed by the founding members
of the Ethics Committee of the SCS:
Prof. Emeritus Tuncer I. Ören (Chair) - Ottawa
Center of the McLeod Institute of Simulation Sciences
Prof. Emeritus
Louis G. Birta - Ottawa Center of the McLeod Institute of Simulation
  Sciences
Prof. Emeritus Maurice S. Elzas, Wageningen Univ., Wageningen, The
  Netherlands
Dr. Iva Smit, E&E Consultants, Netterden, The
  Netherlands
- The Code
and its Rationale were presented at the SCSC 2002 (The Summer
Computer Simulation Conference 2002, San Diego, CA) and were published in its
Proceedings.
- SimSummit was held during July 18-19, 2002 with the
representatives of major Modeling and Simulation institutions. Prof. Tuncer Ören
participated as the representative of the McLeod Institute of Simulation
Sciences ( MISS). One of the resolutions of SimSummit was that a Code of
Professional Ethics should be one of the four pillars -along with Science,
Technology and Applications- for Modeling and Simulation to be considered as a
profession.
