Professional Support for Cooperative Simulation Projects - A Challenge for the Simulation of Logistics and Production Networks

Abstract:
The globalization, the focusing on core capabilities and the expanding international division of labor lead to an economy that is increasingly shaped by logistics- and production networks. Regarding the simulation of logistics- and production systems (which are frequent objects of discrete simulation) this means that on the one hand the intensified enterprise-spreading processes in networks and their systems and structures have to be illustrated.
In the future, on the other hand, simulations will not be accomplished by isolated people but rather by several different partners. Usually these partners are located at different places and different time zones. Until now, at the market available tools were lacking support for supporting such distributed simulation projects.
This paper describes a solution for cooperative simulation called Web Based Simulation Center that has been developed through co-operation of the Otto-von-Guericke-University Magdeburg and the Fraunhofer Institute for Factory Operation and Automation IFF Magdeburg.
Simulation projects are usually cooperative endeavors that involve not only the work on the simulation model itself but also a lot of communication among project partners. In the past, support for communication and cooperation in simulation projects has been poor to non-existent. The WBSC is designed to bring simulation and cooperation together. Because this approach requires and benefits from making simulation tools available on the Web, it is also a first step toward introducing Application Service Providing (ASP) for simulation.
