A Simulation-based Approach to Developing Real-time Distributed Control Systems

Abstract:
In this paper we investigate the use of the Model-View-Controller framework to assist in the development of a real-time distributed control system for manufacturing. This approach requires the developer to simulate the behavior of the controlled system before developing the control system, thereby allowing the control system to be thoroughly tested before implementation. In the paper we provide an example of a simple distributed manufacturing control application and test this approach using the IEC 61499 function block model and a Java-based distributed prototyping environment.
