VIRTUAL SIMULATION OF OPEN SEA AND HARBOUR MANOEUVRING OF CRUISE VESSELS

Abstract:
Manoeuvring simulation for ships is useful during the whole life of a vessel.
During the design phase it’s important to have an idea about the behaviour of the ship to evaluate the satisfaction of the IMO standard requirements.
Moreover if manoeuvrability is a fundamental requirement of the vessel, for example if the ship is conceived to operate in restricted waters, the possibility to evaluate and compare different solutions of manoeuvering devices is essential in the design process.
Also for existing vessels a simulation tool is useful to evaluate the accessibility of a certain harbour for the ship and the best way of moving in restricted water with or without tugs.
Virtual simulation is also very important in the training of the staff of the ship.
As an example of ship manoeuvering simulation, the paper describes the tool in use at CETENA and FINCANTIERI, the Italian naval research centre and the major Italian shipyard, focussing the attention in its develop inside the European project SEA-AHED (Simulation Environment and Advisory System for on-board Help, and Estimation of manoeuvring performance during Design), wich consisted in the application of the simulator to a certain number of large cruise vessels, both to test its suitability as design tool and to enlarge its range of application, for example to different types of propulsion or for different environmental conditions.
